It is the Golden Age of piracy. Nassau is a thriving island sanctuary for piracy in the Bahamas. It is self-governed by its pirates, led by the Guthrie family, who maintains Nassau's financial sustainability by mediating the sale of pirated goods to the outside world. Nassau's self-governance relies on mutual effort between the pirates, including: (i) pirate captains engaging in simple democratic systems, (ii) pirates paying tax to the Guthrie family, (iii) pirates manning the island's fort and defenses, and (iv) inland residents sustaining the local agricultural production.
Nevertheless, piracy is still heavily criminalized throughout civilized society, and the royal navy of surrounding Empires (e.g., Britain, Spain) frequently confront pirates on the open seas. The British Empire, in an attempt to quell piracy, has offered all of Nassau's citizens a full pardon if they agree to renounce piracy, allow British rule to govern the island.
